| SPN Fic: Boys Will Be Boys |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|11:36 am] |
Like usual, I can't seem to write a drabble--the story always gets away from me! This fic started out as a PWP, and then the boys started talking. Damn them anyway.
Boys Will Be Boys (Established Sam/Dean, NC-17, ~2400 words)
Summary: Whatever else might be between them, Dean is the elder brother here--he’s got certain rights, damn it, and he isn’t letting Sam forget it.

( Three more )
Nothing will happen on the house until January, now. I spoke with Plumber today - we're all squared away for the work he's already done, so that just leaves the shower to pay for, and the last bits and pieces of the Joiner's work.
I now have a splendid duck, a Pinot Noir, panettone, red cabbage. Last bits and pieces on Thursday afternoon. |

| Solstice Sermon |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|11:55 am] |
 (art by walkerminion)
Hunting the wren Oh where are you going, said Milder to Moulder Oh we may not tell you said Festel to Fose We´re off to the wood, said John the Red Nose We´re off to the wood, said John the Red Nose
And what will you do, said Milder to Moulder For we may not tell you, said Festel to Fose We´ll shoot the cutty wren, said John the Red Nose We´ll shoot the cutty wren, said John the Red Nose
Oh how will you cut him up, said Milder to Moulder Oh we may not tell you, said Festel to Fose With knives and with forks , said John the Red Nose With knives and with forks , said John the Red Nose
And who´ll get the spare ribs said Milder to Moulder Oh we may not tell you, said Festel to Fose We´ll give them all to the poor, said John the Red Nose We´ll give them all to the poor, said John the Red Nose
Although this song is often associated with the Peasants Revolt of 1381, it is a relic of a much older ritual. The Wren is the Little King of the Waning Year. He is found hiding in a holly bush by Robin Redbreast, who kills him.
On Yule, the Mother has come fully pregnant. Her time is at hand and as the old Sun dies into the longest night, she births the new one. The Holly King, her lover, is not pleased by this reminder of his brother and rival, the Oak King.
Mother informs the Holly King it is time for him to go. No king wants to lay down his crown, and he damnds to know why he must leave and who will make him. Life is beautiful. He loves the cold and frosty stars, the icy wind, the way the snow blankets the world.
Mother smiles and tell him all times change and if he does not step down for the child she carries, even he will die forever. Without the light of the Sun, there will be no growth, no plants, only ice and snow forever. Even his green leaves will shed and die. Everything comes and everything goes. And all that dies is reborn. But without the Sun there will be no rebirth.
She lays his hands on her belly and the Holly King feels the life within her. The warmth comes out even through her body and he melts, tears on his face like dripping icicles.
From out of the growing light of the East comes a young and handsome man. He steps to his aged brother and lays a warm hand beside his face. "It is time."
The Holly King nods, knowing that in time all things are reborn, even he. "I do this for the people, that they may have light and harvest again."
"We thank you for keeping the land safe during the time of Darkness." The Oak King draws forth a sickle and decapitates his brother.
Mother picks up the severed head of her lover and kisses it. "Go into the west. It is the Oak King's time. The wheel always turns."
She covers his body with a blanket of snow and steps into the dawning light of the newborn Sun with her lover, the Oak King. ~ In this, the darkest season of the year, we are hard pressed to remember things change, they always change. The warm days of summer seem far away. The garden is dead and brown. Even here, in the south, we picked the last tomatoes a month ago. The sun, on days he decides to come out, is pale and weak and far away. He lays abed long and retires early, and we want to do the same.
But now, he has been reborn. The days will grow longer. Night will come later and day will come earlier. We may not see immediate life and growth, but soon. In six weeks, early green shoot will start to appear. The trees will bud out, in ghostly haloes of yellow and red and orange and green.
The wheel always turns. Light goes but it always returns. Carry the light with you today and into the fading darkness. ~
The holly and the ivy, When they are both full grown Of all the trees that are in the wood The holly bears the crown
The rising of the Sun And the running of the deer The playing of the merry pipes As we all sing with cheer.
The holly bears a berry As red as any blood The Goddess bears the Solstice Sun To allow our hopes to bud
The rising of the sun And the running of the deer The Green Man and the Holly King Are always welcome here. |

[Dec. 21st, 2009|12:29 pm] |
From the Springfield News-Leader:Three people in the home -- a mother in her 80s and two daughters -- were asleep when the fire began. Scott said the deceased -- one of the daughters -- died from smoke inhalation... The mother was in serious condition at St. John's Hospital. The other daughter was not reported injured. The deceased is schadenkatze.
The "other daughter" is schaden_freude.
I've known the two of them since I've been in online fandom, in the time of alt.tv.highlander, well over a decade ago. They lived near my mom, and I'd try to get a visit in with them when I traveled there. I wasn't able to do so for the past couple of years, so my last memory of seeing them was Christmas Eve, 2004. They helped me plan a surprise visit to Mom, spending that night at the airport, waiting for my delayed flight, and driving the 90 minutes to drop me off well after midnight.
Now one is gone and the other is left without her home, her belongings, and most importantly, her twin.
Through the end of the month, I'll be taking a collection for schaden_freude on behalf of The Seacouver Social Club via PayPal. My original plan was to keep this "in the family" of the SSC, but if the spirit moves you to help, please do even if you're not an SSC member.
All of you SSCers, please give this a signal boost!

It's fairly quiet at work today, so if anyone needs a quick last-minute yuletide beta and thinks I might be reasonably familiar with the fandom they're writing in, feel free to drop me a note at victoria.p @ gmail with the fandom and I will tell you yea or nay.
I uploaded on Saturday and have been procrastinating on Broken Toys ever since. Heh. What kind of Max/Alec story would you make me write, if you could?
This morning I updated unfitforsociety because I figure the next big update will be with yuletide stories, but it's possible people are looking for things to read right now. So unfitforsociety has been updated with 20 recs for December 2009:
* 8 Supernatural * 4 Crossovers * 2 Star Trek Reboot * 2 White Collar * 1 each Being Human, Bones, Dark Angel, and Friday Night Lights

I'm kinda wishing I'd just taken today and tomorrow off. It's a short week, but meh, this weather makes everything more difficult (stupid slushy corners and four foot piles of snow on the sidewalks). Maybe I will work on the year-end writing meme thingy. Hmm...

| Alina Cojocaru Blows My Mind |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|11:39 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | surprised | ] | There are a few great variations and adagios in ballet that are a testament to the prowess of the ballerina dancing them. By far, the most famous is The Rose Adagio in Sleeping Beauty. Here is a perfect description from Answers.com:
The centerpiece of Petipa's The Sleeping Beauty, in which Princess Aurora is presented to her four suitors in Act I. With its thrilling balances and its emphasis on regally perfect presentation (Aurora has to balance unsupported on one leg and on pointe between taking each of her Princes' hands), it presents a challenge to the ballerina matched only (in theatrical lore) by the 32 fouettée turns of Swan Lake.
The longer a ballerina holds the balance, the better the adagio. It's the Ironman Triathalon of ballet. It was said that at some performances, argot Fonteyn would have such a balance that she wouldn't even grab the hand of the prince in front of her. Here is one with Viviana Durante, balances start at 1:09.
Here is the Royal Ballet's freakishly balanced Alina Cojocaru blowing my mind with a back and feet to die for, holding that balance longer than I've ever seen it held:

| happy solstice! |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|09:24 am] |
Good luck to those who are frantically working on their yuletide stories. Having finished mine weeks ago does not make me a better person than you. However, it does make me a more relaxed person. La la la.
Happy Solstice! It is a consolation to me, with the bulk of meteorological winter yet to come, that at least the sun will rise earlier and set later from here on out. Winter's cold and snow bother me not half so much as the darkness, which I really have no right to complain about considering that I live at a moderate latitude. Of course, last year this time I was in the southern hemisphere, and wondering why it wasn't all warm and sunny yet.

You know you're hellbound when you and your girl watch King of Kings and Jesus Christ Superstar for the whip in the Temple and the boy-kissing. King of Kings was a bust, as there was no kiss. So I pointed her to the 2000 version of Superstar, where Jesus is kissing back. |

| | exhausted | ] | I leave tomorrow for home, and the services actually start tomorrow and go through Wednesday. (We're Catholic AND Irish. That's short.) I fly back Christmas Day.
We had some Family Drama last night, and, you know, I don't expect it to end any time in the near future. (Insert additional Irish stereotype here.) I am stocking up on my zen.
I've finished all my yuletide betas and just need to get my own story polished, betaed, and uploaded (in approximately that order). Then packing, getting the cats set up for while I'm gone, and trying to figure out what do to with Christmas presents (wait til I'm back and mail them late? Take them to the funeral? I DON'T KNOW).
Stop the world. I want to get off, get a haircut, wrap some stuff, and get back on.
sorry, I crazy. Thank you, everyone, for all your comments. You're such a huge help.

| Updated List of Jewelry for Sale... |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|10:31 am] |
Good Morning Guys!
At least I'm not posting this one in the middle of the night like I have been lately. But, that's mostly because I crashed last night and couldn't finish it.
I'm sorry that I'm getting this up so close to Christmas, I've just had no time for myself the last few weeks with everything going on. I still haven't even posted my Wish List for this year and I apologize for not being able to keep its Master List updated. I hope to do that later today. Even so, if there's anything here you'd like to give as presents, I could still probably get it to you. I'd just need to get it in the mail by either today or tomorrow. I've got a bunch of things I'll already be mailing out today as it is.
There's a lot of pretty things this time. And this is still just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Lee's mom's jewelry. When I said Sid sent us two boxes full they weren't little boxes. She spent a fortune on her jewelry, it's no wonder she was broke most of the time.
Just look over the list and let me know if you'd like to buy anything. I can tell you what the postage would be from your zip code. Like before, I'll send most things in the USPS Small flat rate boxes as that seems to work out well. So, in the US it's $5.65 with tracking and to most places overseas it's $12.95. If you see anything you like, or have any questions, just drop me a note and let me know. I'll do my best to answer them. As always, my PayPal addy is bstaton @ iglou.com.
Mixed Jewelry Items for Sale: ( December 2009 )
Please, if you wouldn't mind, pass the link around if you could. We are so beyond broke this Christmas it's not even funny. We're getting by but, just barely. Anything I can make from this sale will help. Regardless, though, as always, thanks so much for looking. I really, really appreciate it.
*hugs* |

| snow! |
[Dec. 21st, 2009|10:05 am] |
I love snow. Getting a snowstorm, for me, always feels like getting a present. In Saturday's storm, Philadelphia got 23 inches, according to the report I saw this morning.
The concert was marvelous (and pre-snow). I think there was an extra measure of enthusiasm and joy in it this time; it all felt unusually seamless, effortless. It felt like being in the best church ever. I was startled at the end when people clapped. A friend in the audience said she sensed some of what I felt about the performance, as well. Sometimes, music can be magic.
Woke up at 4:30 am this morning. Alas, my flight is tomorrow.
Here's hoping I wake up at 4:30 am when I need to.
I'm back from my travels with the new year. If I don't get a chance to post while I'm gone, have a happy and safe holiday! |
